Zongzi
Zongzi is a traditional Chinese dish made of sticky rice stuffed with various fillings, wrapped in bamboo leaves, and steamed to perfection.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- Dark soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Dried shrimp - 1/2 cup
- Dried shiitake mushrooms - 10 mushrooms, soaked in water and sliced
- Pork belly - 1 pound, cut into small pieces
- Bamboo leaves - 16 leaves, soaked in water
- Sticky rice - 3 cups
Let's Get Started
- Soak the sticky rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- In a pan, heat some oil and sauté the pork belly until browned.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and dried shrimp to the pan and cook for a few minutes.
- Season the filling with salt, soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, and five-spice powder. Mix well and set aside.
- Take two bamboo leaves and overlap them to form a cone shape.
- Add a spoonful of sticky rice to the bottom of the cone.
- Add a spoonful of the filling on top of the rice.
- Cover the filling with more sticky rice.
- Fold the bamboo leaves over the rice to form a tight package.
- Secure the package with kitchen twine.
- Repeat the process with the remaining leaves, rice, and filling.
- Place the zongzi in a steamer and steam for 2 hours, or until the rice is cooked and the flavors have melded together.
- Remove the zongzi from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.
- To serve, unwrap the zongzi and enjoy!
