Turnip Cake
Turnip cake is a traditional Chinese snack served during Chinese New Year. It is made from shredded radish (commonly referred to as turnip) and plain rice flour.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Vegetable oil - For pan-frying
- Sesame oil - 1 tablespoon
- White pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Dried shiitake mushrooms - 8, soaked and chopped
- Dried shrimp - 1/4 cup, soaked and chopped
- Chinese sausage - 2, diced
- Water - 1 cup
- Rice flour - 1.5 cups
- White radish - 2 cups, shredded
Let's Get Started
- Combine the shredded radish and water in a large bowl. Stir in the rice flour until well combined.
- Heat a pan over medium heat. Add the Chinese sausage, dried shrimp, and shiitake mushrooms. Cook until fragrant.
- Add the radish mixture to the pan. Stir in the green onions, salt, white pepper, and sesame oil. Cook until the mixture thickens.
- Pour the mixture into a greased cake pan. Steam over high heat for 60 minutes, or until set.
- Let the turnip cake cool completely before cutting into slices.
- Heat some vegetable oil in a pan. Pan-fry the turnip cake slices until golden brown on both sides.
- Serve the turnip cake warm with soy sauce or hoisin sauce.
