Tteok
Tteok is a traditional Korean rice cake made from glutinous rice flour. It is commonly used in various Korean dishes and desserts.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Sesame seeds (for garnish) - 1 tablespoon
- Red bean paste (optional) - 1/2 cup
- Cornstarch - 1/4 cup
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- Water - 1 1/2 cups
- Glutinous rice flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a mixing bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour, water, sugar, and salt. Mix well until a smooth batter is formed.
- Pour the batter into a greased steamer tray or a heatproof dish.
- Steam the batter over high heat for about 30 minutes, or until it becomes firm and cooked through.
- Remove the steamed rice cake from the steamer and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Cut the rice cake into desired shapes, such as small rectangles or circles.
- If using red bean paste, flatten a piece of rice cake and place a small amount of red bean paste in the center. Fold the rice cake over the filling and shape it into a ball.
- In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with a little water to make a slurry.
- Dip each piece of rice cake into the cornstarch slurry to prevent sticking.
- Optional: Roll the rice cakes in sesame seeds for added flavor and garnish.
- Serve the tteok as is or use it in various Korean dishes and desserts.
