Torrijas
Torrijas are a traditional Spanish dessert made with bread soaked in milk, infused with flavors, dipped in egg, fried, and then coated in sugar and cinnamon.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Eggs - 2
- Lemon zest - 1 teaspoon
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1/2 cup
- Milk - 2 cups
- Bread - 4 slices, preferably stale
Let's Get Started
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon zest over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Place the bread slices in a shallow dish and pour the milk mixture over them. Let the bread soak for about 5 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- In a separate shallow dish, beat the eggs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Dip each soaked bread slice into the beaten eggs, making sure to coat both sides.
- Fry the bread slices in the hot oil until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the torrijas from the pan and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon.
- Coat each torrija in the sugar-cinnamon mixture.
- Serve the torrijas warm or at room temperature.
