  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes, broth, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. While the soup is simmering, make the grilled cheese sandwiches. Preheat a skillet over medium heat.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of bread. Place a slice of cheese between two slices of bread, with the buttered sides facing out.
  6. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Serve the soup hot with the grilled cheese sandwiches on the side.
