Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken

  1. Cut the chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl.
  2. Add the soy sauce, ginger, Chinese five spice, white pepper, and garlic powder to the bowl and mix well. Let the chicken marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the cornstarch and flour.
  4. Dip each piece of chicken into the beaten egg, then coat in the flour mixture.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F.
  6. Fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes.
  7. Drain the chicken on paper towels and garnish with the basil leaves before serving.
