Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken
A popular street food in Taiwan, this popcorn chicken is marinated in soy sauce, ginger, and Chinese five spice, then deep-fried to perfection.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Basil leaves - A handful, for garnish
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Egg - 1, beaten
- All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
- Cornstarch - 1/2 cup
- Garlic powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- White pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
- Chinese five spice - 1 teaspoon
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
- Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Chicken thighs - 1 pound, boneless and skinless
Let's Get Started
- Cut the chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl.
- Add the soy sauce, ginger, Chinese five spice, white pepper, and garlic powder to the bowl and mix well. Let the chicken marinate for at least 15 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the cornstarch and flour.
- Dip each piece of chicken into the beaten egg, then coat in the flour mixture.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F.
- Fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes.
- Drain the chicken on paper towels and garnish with the basil leaves before serving.
