Souzoukakia
Souzoukakia are delicious Greek meatballs in a rich tomato sauce, originating from the city of Smyrna. They are typically served with rice or mashed potatoes.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Red wine - 1/2 cup
- Tomato sauce - 2 cups
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Cumin - 1 teaspoon
- Egg - 1
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, finely chopped
- Bread crumbs - 1 cup
- Ground beef - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, onion, garlic, egg, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into small meatballs.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes.
- Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the tomato sauce and red wine. Bring to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 30 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve the souzoukakia with rice or mashed potatoes.
