Soda Bread
This traditional Irish soda bread is quick and easy to make, with a crusty exterior and a soft, tender interior.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Buttermilk - 1 and 3/4 cups
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Baking soda - 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 4 cups
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and lightly grease a baking sheet.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
- Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix the ingredients together until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for about 1 minute.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Using a sharp knife, make a cross-shaped cut on the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
