Ingredients - Serves 8

Let's Get Started

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
  6. Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm).
  7. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out scones from the dough. Place them onto the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm with butter and jam.
