These classic scones are buttery, flaky, and perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Optional add-ins (e.g., chocolate chips, dried fruit) - As desired
- Egg - 1
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Unsalted butter - 1/2 cup, cold and cubed
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Baking powder - 2 teaspoons
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vanilla extract, and egg.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. If desired, fold in any optional add-ins.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
- Shape the dough into a circle or rectangle, about 1-inch thick.
- Using a sharp knife or a biscuit cutter, cut the dough into 8 equal-sized pieces.
- Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each scone.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown on top.
- Remove from the oven and let the scones cool on a wire rack before serving.
