Samay Baji
Samay Baji is a traditional Newari dish from Nepal, consisting of various snacks and accompaniments.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Mustard oil - 1 tablespoon
- Cumin powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - To taste
- Roasted beaten rice (chiura) - 1/4 cup
- Roasted sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon
- Roasted peanuts - 1/4 cup
- Roasted soybeans - 1/4 cup
- Lemon - 1, juiced
- Cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Green chilies - 2, finely chopped
- Garlic - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Yogurt - 1 cup
- Potatoes - 2 medium-sized, boiled and diced
- Black-eyed peas (bodi) - 1 cup, boiled
- Beaten rice (chiura) - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- Wash the beaten rice (chiura) and soak it in water for 5 minutes. Drain the water and set aside.
- In a pan, heat ghee and add grated ginger, minced garlic, and chopped green chilies. Sauté for a minute.
- Add boiled black-eyed peas (bodi), boiled and diced potatoes, turmeric powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the yogurt until smooth. Add salt and mix well.
- In a serving plate, arrange the soaked beaten rice (chiura), cooked black-eyed peas and potatoes mixture, yogurt, roasted soybeans, roasted peanuts, roasted sesame seeds, roasted beaten rice (chiura), and chopped cilantro.
- Drizzle mustard oil and lemon juice over the samay baji.
- Serve immediately and enjoy the traditional flavors of Samay Baji!
