Poppy Seed Roll
A traditional Eastern European dessert, this sweet yeast bread roll is filled with a mixture of ground poppy seeds and sugar.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Honey - 1/4 cup
- Poppy seeds - 1 cup, ground
- All-purpose flour - 4 cups
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Eggs - 2
- Butter - 1/2 cup, melted
- Active dry yeast - 1 packet
- Sugar - 1/2 cup
- Milk - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Warm the milk and dissolve the sugar and yeast in it. Let it sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, melted butter, eggs, and salt.
- Gradually add the flour, mixing until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until it's smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- In the meantime, prepare the filling by combining the ground poppy seeds, honey, and vanilla extract.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread the poppy seed filling over it, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long side, and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for about 35 minutes, or until the roll is golden brown.
- Let it cool before slicing and serving.
