Onion and Cheese Baked Ziti

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent and fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato sauce to the skillet and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, half of the shredded mozzarella cheese, and half of the grated Parmesan cheese.
  6. In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture on the bottom. Add a layer of cooked ziti pasta on top.
  7. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the pasta. Repeat the layers with the remaining tomato sauce, pasta, and ricotta cheese mixture.
  8. Top with the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving.
