Onigiri
Onigiri, also known as Japanese rice balls, are a popular snack in Japan. They are usually shaped into triangles or cylinders and often wrapped in nori (seaweed).
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Furikake (rice seasoning) - 1 tablespoon, optional
- Umeboshi (pickled plum) - 4, optional
- Nori (seaweed) - 4 sheets
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 2 cups
- Sushi rice - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- Wash the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Then, add the rice and water to a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Once the rice is cooked, let it cool slightly until it's cool enough to handle.
- Wet your hands with water and sprinkle them with salt. Take about a handful of rice and shape it into a triangle or cylinder.
- If using umeboshi or furikake, make a small indentation in the rice and fill it with the umeboshi or sprinkle with furikake. Then, mold the rice around the filling to enclose it.
- Wrap the onigiri with a sheet of nori.
- Repeat with the remaining rice and fillings.
- Serve the onigiri at room temperature or slightly warmed.
