New Orleans Style Beignets

Ingredients - Serves 6
- Powdered sugar - Powdered sugar for dusting
- Vegetable oil - Vegetable oil for frying
- All-purpose flour - 3 1/2 cups
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg - 1
- Unsalted butter - 3 tablespoons, melted
- Whole milk - 1/2 cup
- Granulated sugar - 1/4 cup
- Warm water - 1/2 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons)

- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, milk, melted butter, egg, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the yeast mixture to the bowl and stir to combine.
- Gradually add the flour to the bowl, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut the dough into 2-inch squares or use a round cutter to make beignet shapes.
- Carefully drop a few beignets into the hot oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove the beignets from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough.
- Dust the warm beignets generously with powdered sugar before serving.
