Laskiaispulla
Laskiaispulla is a traditional Finnish sweet bun filled with whipped cream and jam, typically enjoyed during the Laskiainen festival.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- Strawberry jam - 1/2 cup
- Whipped cream - 1 cup
- All-purpose flour - 3 cups
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg - 1
- Butter - 1/4 cup, melted
- Sugar - 1/4 cup
- Active dry yeast - 2 1/4 teaspoons
- Milk - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Warm the milk in a small saucepan until it reaches about 110°F (43°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy.
- Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir well to combine.
- Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. The dough should be slightly sticky.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
- Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between them for rising.
- Cover the dough balls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once the buns are cooled, slice them in half horizontally.
- Fill each bun with a generous amount of whipped cream and a spoonful of strawberry jam.
- Place the top half of the bun back on and dust with powdered sugar.
- Serve and enjoy!
