A traditional Mardi Gras dessert, this King Cake is a sweet and colorful treat.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Purple, green, and gold sugar sprinkles - As needed
- Powdered sugar - 2 cups
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Lemon zest - 1 teaspoon
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Eggs - 2
- All-purpose flour - 4 cups
- Active dry yeast - 1 package
- Granulated sugar - 1/4 cup
- Unsalted butter - 1/4 cup
- Milk - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk, butter, and granulated sugar until the butter is melted. Let cool until it's warm to the touch, then stir in the yeast and let sit for 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine 3 cups of the flour, the eggs, salt, nutmeg, and lemon zest. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Sprinkle with the cinnamon and roll up the dough tightly. Form the dough into a ring and place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake the cake until it's golden brown, about 30 minutes.
- While the cake is cooling, make the icing by mixing the powdered sugar with enough water to make a pourable icing. Drizzle the icing over the cooled cake and immediately sprinkle with the colored sugars.
