Let's Get Started

  1. Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a large pot, combine the lentils, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the lentils are soft, about 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the garlic, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and chili powder to the pan. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the onion and spice mixture to the pot with the lentils. Stir well to combine.
  6. Simmer the dahl for another 10 minutes to let the flavors meld together. Adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  7. Serve the dahl hot, with rice or naan bread on the side.
