Indian Chicken Biryani
A flavorful and aromatic Indian rice dish made with chicken, basmati rice, and a blend of spices.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Water - 4 cups
- Salt - To taste
- Mint leaves - Handful, chopped
- Fresh coriander leaves - Handful, chopped
- Ghee - 3 tablespoons
- Bay leaf - 1
- Cloves - 4
- Cardamom pods - 3
- Cinnamon stick - 1 inch
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Biryani masala powder - 2 tablespoons
- Green chili - 2, slit
- Yogurt - 1/2 cup
- Ginger-garlic paste - 2 tablespoons
- Tomato - 2 medium, chopped
- Onion - 2 large, thinly sliced
- Basmati rice - 2 cups
- Chicken - 500 grams, bone-in pieces
Let's Get Started
- Wash the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
- Heat ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and bay leaf. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
- Add the sliced onions and cook until golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
- Add the chicken pieces and cook until they are browned on all sides.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and mushy.
- Add the biryani masala powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well to coat the chicken with the spices.
- Add the yogurt and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
- Add the soaked and drained basmati rice to the pot. Stir gently to combine with the chicken and spices.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until the rice is cooked and the flavors have melded together.
- Remove from heat and let the biryani rest for 10 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves and mint leaves.
