Gloucester Old Salt Fish Cake
A traditional British dish, these fish cakes are made with salted cod and mashed potatoes, then fried until golden.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Flour - For dusting
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Potatoes - 4 large, peeled and cubed
- Salted cod - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- Soak the salted cod in cold water for 24 hours, changing the water several times.
- Boil the potatoes until tender, then drain and mash with the milk and butter. Season with salt and pepper.
- Drain the cod and flake it into the mashed potatoes. Mix well.
- Shape the mixture into patties and dust with flour.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Fry the fish cakes until golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes per side.
- Drain on paper towels before serving.
