French Onion Mac and Cheese
A delicious fusion of French onion soup and creamy mac and cheese.
Ingredients - Serves 6
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Thyme - 1 teaspoon
- Macaroni - 2 cups, uncooked
- Parmesan cheese - 1/2 cup, grated
- Gruyere cheese - 2 cups, grated
- Milk - 2 cups
- Flour - 2 tablespoons
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onions - 2 large, thinly sliced
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
- Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Stir in the flour until it coats the onions and garlic.
- Slowly whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the Gruyere and Parmesan cheeses until melted.
- Cook the macaroni according to the package instructions, then drain and add to the cheese sauce.
- Stir in the thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the mixture into a baking dish and bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
