Ensaimadas
Ensaimadas are a traditional sweet bread from the Balearic Islands, Spain. They are light, fluffy, and have a distinctive spiral shape.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
- Butter - 150 grams, softened
- Eggs - 2
- Water - 250 ml, lukewarm
- Active dry yeast - 15 grams
- Sugar - 100 grams
- All-purpose flour - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Add the water and eggs and mix until a dough forms.
- Add the softened butter and knead the dough for about 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long, thin rope.
- Spiral the ropes into a snail shape and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake the ensaimadas for about 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Let the ensaimadas cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then dust them with powdered sugar before serving.
