A unique twist on traditional sushi, this Dutch version features herring, a popular fish in the Netherlands, rolled with sushi rice.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Wasabi - For serving
- Soy sauce - For serving
- Nori sheets - 4
- Herring fillets - 4, thinly sliced
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Rice vinegar - 1/4 cup
- Water - 2 cups
- Sushi rice - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes.
- In a small bowl, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Stir until the sugar and salt are dissolved.
- When the rice is done, transfer it to a large bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Allow the rice to cool to room temperature.
- Place a nori sheet on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands and spread a thin layer of rice on the nori, leaving a small space at the top and bottom for sealing the roll.
- Arrange a line of herring slices in the center of the rice. Roll the sushi tightly using the bamboo mat, applying pressure to keep the roll firm.
- Slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces using a sharp knife. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
- Serve the sushi with soy sauce and wasabi.
