Croque Monseiur de Luxe
This deluxe version of the classic Croque Monsieur sandwich features layers of ham, Gruyere cheese, and creamy bechamel sauce, all baked to perfection.
Ingredients - Serves 2
- Parmesan cheese - 2 tablespoons, grated
- Milk - 2 tablespoons
- Egg - 1
- Gruyere cheese - 4 slices
- Ham - 4 slices
- White bread - 4 slices
- Dijon mustard - 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Milk - 1 cup
- All-purpose flour - 2 tablespoons
- Butter - 2 tablespoons
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard.
- Spread the bechamel sauce on one side of each bread slice.
- Place 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Gruyere cheese on top of the sauce on 2 bread slices. Top with the remaining bread slices, sauce side down.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet. Sprinkle the tops with grated Parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
