Let's Get Started

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard.
  5. Spread the bechamel sauce on one side of each bread slice.
  6. Place 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Gruyere cheese on top of the sauce on 2 bread slices. Top with the remaining bread slices, sauce side down.
  7. In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
  8. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  9. Transfer the sandwiches to a baking sheet. Sprinkle the tops with grated Parmesan cheese.
  10. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Serve hot and enjoy!
