Christstollen
Christstollen is a traditional German bread usually enjoyed during the Christmas season. It's filled with dried fruit, nuts, and a hint of rum.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Powdered sugar - For dusting
- Rum - 2 tablespoons
- Chopped almonds - 1/2 cup
- Mixed candied fruit - 1 cup
- Raisins - 1 cup
- Eggs - 2
- Butter - 1 cup, softened
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1/2 cup
- All-purpose flour - 4 1/2 cups
- Milk - 1/2 cup, warm
- Active dry yeast - 1 package
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let stand until creamy, about 10 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in yeast mixture, eggs, raisins, candied fruit, almonds, and rum. Knead until dough comes together.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down dough and knead again briefly. Shape into a loaf and place on a baking sheet.
- Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour, or until golden brown. Allow to cool, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
