Chilate
Chilate is a traditional Salvadoran beverage made with corn, cacao, and spices. It is rich, creamy, and perfect for cold weather.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Ground cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
- Evaporated milk - 1 cup
- Sugar - 4 tablespoons
- Cacao powder - 2 tablespoons
- Whole cloves - 4
- Cinnamon sticks - 2
- Water - 4 cups
- Corn kernels - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- In a large pot, combine the corn kernels, water, cinnamon sticks, and cloves.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the corn is tender.
- Remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves from the pot.
- Using a blender or immersion blender, puree the corn mixture until smooth.
- Return the pureed mixture to the pot and add the cacao powder and sugar.
- Stir well to combine and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the evaporated milk.
- Serve hot, sprinkled with ground cinnamon on top.
