Char Siu
Char Siu is a popular way to flavor and prepare barbecued pork in Cantonese cuisine. It is sweet, savory, and just a little bit spicy.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Red food coloring - Optional, a few drops
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Chinese five spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Soy sauce - 1/4 cup
- Honey - 1/4 cup
- Hoisin sauce - 1/4 cup
- Pork shoulder - 1.5 pounds
Let's Get Started
- Cut the pork shoulder into long strips about 2 inches thick.
- In a bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, five spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring if using.
- Add the pork to the marinade and turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking tray with foil.
- Place the pork on the tray and reserve the leftover marinade.
- Bake for 30 minutes, then turn the pork over and brush with the reserved marinade.
- Bake for another 30 minutes, or until the pork is cooked through and caramelized on the outside.
- Let the pork rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
