Cha Siu
Cha Siu is a popular Cantonese dish, a variety of siu mei, which is marinated, skewered, and barbecued meat. It is tender, flavorful, and slightly sweet.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Red food coloring - Optional, a few drops
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Chinese five spice powder - 1 teaspoon
- Oyster sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Soy sauce - 1/4 cup
- Honey - 1/4 cup
- Hoisin sauce - 1/4 cup
- Pork shoulder - 1 pound
Let's Get Started
- Cut the pork into long strips or chunks, about 2 inches thick.
- In a bowl, combine the hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, oyster sauce, five spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring if using.
- Add the pork to the marinade and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Remove the pork from the marinade, reserving the leftover marinade for basting.
- Grill or bake the pork for 20 minutes, then flip and baste with the reserved marinade. Cook for another 20 minutes, or until the pork is cooked through and slightly charred.
- Let the pork rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve with rice and vegetables.
