Baklava
Baklava is a sweet and rich pastry made with layers of phyllo dough, nuts, and honey syrup.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Water - 1/2 cup
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Honey - 1 cup
- Unsalted butter - 1 cup, melted
- Ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Pistachios - 1 cup, finely chopped
- Walnuts - 2 cups, finely chopped
- Phyllo dough - 1 package, thawed
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a bowl, mix together the walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and cinnamon.
- Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Repeat the layering process with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough and the nut mixture.
- Continue layering until all the phyllo dough and nut mixture is used, ending with a layer of phyllo dough on top.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup by combining honey, lemon juice, and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it, making sure to cover all the pieces.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving.
