Baguette de Campagne is a rustic French bread with a crispy crust and a soft, chewy interior.
Ingredients - Serves 2
- Salt - 2 teaspoons
- Active dry yeast - 2 teaspoons
- Water - 2 cups
- Whole wheat flour - 1 cup
- Bread flour - 3 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, whole wheat flour, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a baking stone or baking sheet in the oven to preheat.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions.
- Shape each portion into a baguette shape by rolling it out into a long, thin loaf.
- Transfer the baguettes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or a baguette pan.
- Using a sharp knife, make diagonal slashes on the top of each baguette.
- Place the baking sheet or baguette pan onto the preheated baking stone or baking sheet in the oven.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the baguettes are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let the baguettes cool on a wire rack before serving.
