Casatiello is a traditional Neapolitan Easter bread, filled with salami and cheese. It's a savory and rich bread that's perfect for special occasions.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Eggs - 4
- Cheese - 200 grams, diced
- Salami - 200 grams, diced
- Lard - 50 grams
- Sugar - 10 grams
- Salt - 10 grams
- Yeast - 7 grams
- Water - 300 ml
- Bread flour - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- Dissolve the yeast in the water and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and mix until a dough forms.
- Add the lard and knead the dough until it's smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour.
- After the dough has risen, knead in the salami and cheese.
- Shape the dough into a ring and place it in a greased baking pan.
- Let the dough rise for another hour.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Beat one egg and brush it over the top of the dough.
- Bake the bread for about 1 hour, or until it's golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool before slicing and serving.
