Supplì

Supplì are delicious fried rice balls filled with mozzarella, typical of Roman cuisine.

Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil - For frying
  • Salt - To taste
  • Breadcrumbs - 1 cup
  • Eggs - 2
  • Mozzarella cheese - 1/2 cup, diced
  • Tomato sauce - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Arborio rice - 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Cook the rice in boiling water until it is al dente.
  2. Drain the rice and mix it with the tomato sauce. Let it cool.
  3. Take a spoonful of the rice mixture and flatten it in your hand.
  4. Place a piece of mozzarella in the center and shape the rice around it to form a ball.
  5. Beat the eggs in a bowl. Dip each rice ball in the egg, then roll it in the breadcrumbs.
  6. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Fry the supplì in batches until they are golden brown, about 4 minutes.
  8. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.
