Let's Get Started

  1. Cut the sponge cake into thin slices.
  2. Line a dome-shaped bowl with the sponge cake slices, making sure to cover the entire surface of the bowl.
  3. In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form.
  4. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract to the whipped cream and continue to whip until stiff peaks form.
  5. Fold in the almond liqueur, chopped dark chocolate, and candied fruit.
  6. Spoon the cream mixture into the cake-lined bowl, making sure to fill all the gaps.
  7. Cover the cream with more slices of sponge cake, pressing down gently to compact the dessert.
  8. Refrigerate the zuccotto for at least 2 hours, or until set.
  9. Before serving, turn the zuccotto out onto a serving plate and dust with additional powdered sugar, if desired.
