Zongzi
Zongzi is a traditional Chinese food, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- White pepper - 1 teaspoon
- Cooking wine - 2 tablespoons
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Dark soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Light soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
- Dried shiitake mushrooms - 10, soaked and sliced
- Salted duck egg yolks - 10
- Pork belly - 500 grams, cut into chunks
- Bamboo leaves - 20
- Glutinous rice - 3 cups
Let's Get Started
- Soak the glutinous rice and bamboo leaves in water overnight.
- Marinate the pork belly with light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, cooking wine, and white pepper for at least 2 hours.
- Take two bamboo leaves, and fold them into a cone shape.
- Fill the cone with a layer of rice, a piece of pork, a salted egg yolk, some mushrooms, and then another layer of rice.
- Fold the leaves over the top and secure with cooking string.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
- Place the zongzi in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 2 hours.
- Allow the zongzi to cool before unwrapping and serving.
