Ukrainian Pyrizhky

Ingredients - Serves 12

Let's Get Started

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs.
  3. Mix until a dough forms, then transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a small circle.
  6. Place a spoonful of your chosen filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges to seal.
  7. Place the filled buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Brush the risen buns with the egg wash.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
