Scotch Eggs
Scotch eggs are a classic British dish consisting of hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried until golden and crispy.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Paprika - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 1/2 cup
- Breadcrumbs - 1 cup
- Ground pork sausage - 1 pound
- Eggs - 4 large
Let's Get Started
- Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 minutes.
- Remove the eggs from the saucepan and place them in a bowl of ice water to cool. Once cooled, peel the eggs.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork sausage, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well.
- Divide the sausage mixture into 4 equal portions. Flatten each portion into a thin patty.
- Place a peeled hard-boiled egg in the center of each patty. Wrap the sausage meat around the egg, ensuring it is fully covered.
- In separate bowls, place the flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs.
- Roll each sausage-wrapped egg in flour, then dip it in the beaten eggs, and finally coat it in breadcrumbs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully lower the coated eggs into the hot oil and fry for about 5-6 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the scotch eggs from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve the scotch eggs warm or at room temperature. They can be enjoyed on their own or with a side of mustard or dipping sauce.
