Schweinshaxe
Schweinshaxe is a traditional German dish consisting of roasted pork knuckle with crispy skin and tender meat.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Water - 2 cups
- Beer - 1 cup
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Onion powder - 1 tablespoon
- Garlic powder - 1 tablespoon
- Caraway seeds - 1 tablespoon
- Black pepper - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - 2 tablespoons
- Pork knuckles - 4
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Score the skin of the pork knuckles in a crisscross pattern.
- In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, caraway seeds, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Rub the spice mixture all over the pork knuckles, including the scored skin.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe skillet or roasting pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the pork knuckles to the skillet and sear on all sides until browned, about 5 minutes per side.
- Pour the beer and water into the skillet, making sure not to pour it over the crispy skin.
- Cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil and transfer to the preheated oven.
- Roast for 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the pork knuckles are tender and the skin is crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let the pork knuckles rest for 10 minutes before serving.
- Serve the Schweinshaxe with traditional German sides like sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and mustard.
