Let's Get Started

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda.
  7. Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist it into a pretzel shape.
  8. Boil the pretzels in the baking soda water for 30 seconds each, then place them on the baking sheet.
  9. Sprinkle the pretzels with coarse salt and bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.
