Pignolata
Pignolata is a traditional Italian dessert, typical of Sicily. It's made of small fried dough balls, covered with honey and often decorated with colored sprinkles or chopped nuts.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Sprinkles or chopped nuts - For decoration
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Honey - 1 cup
- Butter - 2 tablespoons, melted
- Sugar - 1/2 cup
- Eggs - 3
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, eggs, sugar, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
- Roll the dough into small balls, about the size of a marble.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Fry the dough balls in batches until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
- In a separate saucepan, heat the honey over medium heat until it becomes liquid.
- Add the fried dough balls to the honey and stir until they are all coated.
- Arrange the balls in a mound on a serving platter and decorate with sprinkles or chopped nuts.
- Let the pignolata cool before serving.
