Meshaltet
Meshaltet is a traditional Egyptian pastry made with layers of buttery dough and honey syrup.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Chopped nuts (optional) - 1/2 cup
- Ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 1/2 cup
- Honey - 1 cup
- Butter - 1 cup, melted
- Phyllo dough - 1 package
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
- Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish and brush with melted butter.
- Repeat the previous step with half of the phyllo dough sheets.
- Sprinkle the chopped nuts evenly over the phyllo dough (optional).
- Place another sheet of phyllo dough on top and brush with melted butter.
- Repeat the previous step with the remaining phyllo dough sheets.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the layered phyllo dough into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- While the meshaltet is baking, prepare the honey syrup by combining honey, water, lemon juice, and ground cinnamon in a saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Remove the baked meshaltet from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it.
- Allow the meshaltet to cool and soak in the syrup for at least 1 hour before serving.
- Serve the meshaltet at room temperature and enjoy!
