Kunefe
Kunefe is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded phyllo dough, cheese, and a sweet syrup. It's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and absolutely delicious.
Ingredients - Serves 8
- Pistachios - 1/4 cup, crushed
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 2 cups
- Sugar - 2 cups
- Mozzarella cheese - 2 cups, shredded
- Unsalted butter - 1 cup, melted
- Shredded phyllo dough (kadayif) - 500 grams
Let's Get Started
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread half of the shredded phyllo dough in a round baking dish. Press it down firmly.
- Spread the cheese over the phyllo dough.
- Cover the cheese with the remaining phyllo dough, pressing down firmly.
- Pour the melted butter over the top of the phyllo dough.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- While the kunefe is baking, make the syrup. Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the lemon juice and simmer for another 2 minutes.
- Pour the hot syrup over the kunefe as soon as it comes out of the oven.
- Sprinkle the crushed pistachios over the top.
- Serve the kunefe warm.
