Irish Moss Drink
A traditional Jamaican beverage, made from Irish moss (a type of seaweed), milk, and various spices. It's known for its rich, creamy texture and high nutritional value.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Sugar - To taste
- Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon, ground
- Nutmeg - 1/2 teaspoon, grated
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Sweetened condensed milk - 1 can
- Water - 4 cups
- Irish moss - 1 cup, dried
Let's Get Started
- Rinse the Irish moss to remove any sand or debris, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- Drain the moss and place it in a large pot with the 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45 minutes, or until the moss is soft and the water has thickened.
- Remove from heat and let cool. The mixture should have a gel-like consistency.
- Blend the moss mixture in a blender until smooth.
- Return the mixture to the pot and add the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into a jug and refrigerate until chilled.
- Serve the Irish moss drink cold, over ice if desired.
