Country Fried Steak
A classic Southern dish, country fried steak is a comfort food favorite. Tenderized beef cutlets are breaded and fried to perfection, then smothered in a savory gravy.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Beef broth - 2 cups
- Vegetable oil - 1/2 cup
- Salt and pepper - To taste
- Milk - 1/4 cup
- Eggs - 2
- All-purpose flour - 1 cup
- Beef cube steak - 4 pieces
Let's Get Started
- Season the steak with salt and pepper, then dredge in flour.
- Beat the eggs with 1/4 cup of milk, then dip the floured steaks in the egg mixture and dredge in flour again.
- Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the steaks until golden brown, about 5 minutes per side.
- Remove the steaks and drain on paper towels. Keep warm.
- Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the oil in the skillet. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the flour left over from dredging.
- Gradually mix in the beef broth and 1/2 cup of milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Lower the heat and simmer until thickened, about 10 minutes.
- Season the gravy with salt and pepper to taste. Serve the steaks smothered with the gravy.
