Bisi Bele Bath
Bisi Bele Bath is a traditional Indian dish from the Karnataka region. It's a spicy, rice-based meal with origins in Mysore Palace. This dish is made from a mixture of lentils, rice, assorted vegetables and a special spice blend, garnished with a generous amount of ghee.
Ingredients - Serves 4
- Salt - To taste
- Curry leaves - A few
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Asafoetida - A pinch
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Bisi bele bath powder - 2 tablespoons
- Tamarind pulp - 1 tablespoon
- Assorted vegetables (carrot, beans, peas, etc.) - 2 cups, chopped
- Toor dal - 1/2 cup
- Rice - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Wash the rice and dal together and cook them with 4 cups of water in a pressure cooker for 4 whistles.
- In a separate pan, cook the chopped vegetables until they are soft.
- Soak the tamarind in a little water and extract the juice.
- In a large pan, heat the ghee and add the mustard seeds. When they start to splutter, add the curry leaves and asafoetida.
- Add the tamarind juice, Bisi Bele Bath powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the pan and bring to a boil.
- Add the cooked vegetables and simmer for a few minutes.
- Add the cooked rice and dal to the pan and mix well. Cook for another 5-10 minutes on low heat.
- Serve hot, garnished with a dollop of ghee.
