Bath Buns
Bath Buns are sweet, yeasty round buns, topped with crushed sugar cubes and currants. They are a traditional British teatime treat.
Ingredients - Serves 12
- Crushed sugar cubes - 1/4 cup
- Currants - 1/2 cup
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 4 cups
- Eggs - 2
- Unsalted butter - 1/4 cup, melted
- Granulated sugar - 1/2 cup
- Active dry yeast - 1 packet
- Milk - 1 cup
Let's Get Started
- Warm the milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles, then remove from heat. Let cool until lukewarm.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, yeast, sugar, butter, and eggs. Stir until the yeast is dissolved.
- Mix in the flour and salt. Beat well until the mixture forms a smooth, soft dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead in the currants. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, and form into round buns.
- Place the buns on the prepared baking sheet. Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- As soon as they come out of the oven, brush the buns with a little milk and sprinkle with crushed sugar cubes. Let cool on a wire rack.
