Banh Tieu
Banh Tieu is a Vietnamese deep-fried sesame bread with a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- Vegetable oil - For frying
- Sesame seeds - 1/4 cup
- Warm water - 1 cup
- Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Active dry yeast - 2 teaspoons
- All-purpose flour - 3 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix well.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 10 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Gently flatten each dough ball into a disc shape, then use your thumb to make a hole in the center.
- Carefully drop the dough discs into the hot oil, frying 2-3 at a time. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Remove the fried Banh Tieu from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- While still warm, roll the Banh Tieu in sesame seeds to coat.
- Serve the Banh Tieu warm and enjoy!
