Pirog

Pirog is a traditional Russian pastry filled with various ingredients such as meat, vegetables, or fruits.

Ingredients

  • Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Salt and pepper - To taste
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onion - 1, finely chopped
  • Ground beef - 1 pound
  • Water - 1/2 cup, cold
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Butter - 1 cup, cold and cubed
  • All - purpose flour - 3 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cold cubed butter, and salt. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is softened. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Roll out one portion on a floured surface to fit the bottom of a greased 9-inch pie dish.
  6. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly over the dough in the pie dish.
  7. Roll out the remaining portion of dough and place it on top of the filling. Seal the edges by pressing them together with your fingers or a fork.
  8. Brush the top of the pirog with beaten egg for a golden crust.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  11. Slice and serve the pirog warm as a delicious main course.
