Huaraches

Huaraches are a traditional Mexican dish made with masa dough, topped with beans, meat, cheese, and various toppings.

Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil - For frying
  • Salt - To taste
  • Lime - 1, cut into wedges
  • Avocado - 1, sliced
  • Cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Onion - 1/2 cup, diced
  • Tomatoes - 1 cup, diced
  • Lettuce - 1 cup, shredded
  • Cheese - 1 cup, grated
  • Cooked meat (e.g. shredded chicken, beef, or pork) - 1 cup
  • Refried beans - 1 cup
  • Water - 1 1/2 cups
  • Masa harina - 2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the masa harina and water. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  2. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval-shaped disk.
  3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook each masa disk for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until lightly browned and cooked through.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the masa disks one at a time until they puff up and become crispy, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
  5. Spread a layer of refried beans on each huarache.
  6. Top with cooked meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and avocado slices.
  7. Season with salt to taste and serve with lime wedges on the side.
