Bacalhau Com Natas

Bacalhau com Natas, or Cod with Cream, is a popular Portuguese dish made with salted cod, potatoes, onions, and a rich cream sauce.

Ingredients

  • Cheese - 100 grams, grated
  • Salt and pepper - To taste
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Flour - 2 tablespoons
  • Milk - 200 ml
  • Heavy cream - 200 ml
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Onions - 2 large, thinly sliced
  • Potatoes - 500 grams, peeled and sliced
  • Salted cod - 500 grams, soaked and shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Boil the potatoes until tender, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook until soft.
  4. Add the shredded cod to the pan and cook for a few minutes until it starts to flake.
  5. In a separate pan, melt the butter. Stir in the flour to make a roux, then gradually add the milk and cream, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  6. Add the cod and onions to the cream sauce and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper.
  7. Layer the potatoes and cod mixture in a baking dish, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top.
  8. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the dish.
  9. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
