Stroopwafel
Stroopwafel is a traditional Dutch treat made of two thin waffle cookies filled with caramel syrup.
Ingredients - Serves 10
- Caramel syrup - 1 cup
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Milk - 1/4 cup
- Yeast - 1 teaspoon
- Egg - 1
- Granulated sugar - 1/2 cup
- Butter - 1 cup, softened
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Let's Get Started
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add the flour and yeast mixture to the butter mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
- Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat a stroopwafel iron or a regular waffle iron.
- Divide the dough into small balls and place each ball onto the preheated iron.
- Close the iron and cook the waffles for about 2 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove the waffles from the iron and let them cool slightly.
- Using a sharp knife, carefully slice each waffle in half horizontally.
- Spread caramel syrup on one half of each waffle and sandwich it with the other half.
- Serve the stroopwafels warm or at room temperature.
